Pastor Risks Jail to Protest Edict against Feeding the Homeless

An official with the Southern Baptist Convention says he's willing to go to jail, if necessary, to oppose a new ordinance prohibiting the distribution of free or low-cost food in Las Vegas city parks. Click here to read the full story.

So now we have a city government using the power of the state to stop churches from caring for the least of these. This is the exact opposite of what God ordained the government to do.

Any comments?

No question that this is government malfunctioning badly. Oftentimes government wants to protect citizens (I'll bet the law was intended to prevent the homeless receiving substandard nutrition) but winds up making it harder for people of good will to help them.

I am sure you're right about the good intentions behind the law. It is amazing how short-sighted people can be even when their motives are apparently good. When I taught at a Catholic college in New York, one of my colleagues said that churches shouldn't be allowed to feed the homeless because church staff may not know as much about nutrition as the government does. As if the government knows best about everything!

How silly of me! Of course the government knows everything. Seriously, I have met people who truly believed that. Once I was tutoring a college student on Plato's "Republic," and she liked the idea of the government deciding what every citizen's occupation would be. She said she was a nursing major and that she knew too many nursing students who had no business being nurses. I asked, "What if the government decided YOU couldn't be a nurse?" She replied, "Oh, but the government would never say that." When I asked why, she said, "Because the government knows everything, and they would know I'd make a perfect nurse!"
